The Print of the Year and the Boudník Award

The Print of the Year is an annual national contest and exhibition of graphic arts. It raised from an initiative of the Inter-Kontakt-Grafik Foundation (today, a civic association), Asociace volné grafiky and Středoevropská galerie a nakladatelství in 1995. Following its successfull first edition held at the Hungarian Cultural Centre in Prague in February 1994, the City of Prague engaged as a main co-organizer since the second year. The exhibiton took place at the Old Town Hall in Prague from 1996 to 2003 and at the Clam-Gallas Palace in Prague since 2004.
  v The aim of this contest is to support artistic and social prestige of printmaking with its abundant past and traditions, which is able to reflect the contemporary world and today's artistic issues. The exhibition offers an opportunity to regularly compare creative outputs by renowned artists, unknown and emerging authors, and students and introduce them to the broadest public. Awarding of the prizes by sponsoring and community institutions facilitates their longterm active involving in the process of professional recognition with numerous mutual benefits.
v The exhibition has the goal to present all the supplied works. However, due to a lack of space, the jury's commendation could be considered in all categories.
v The contest is open only to the citizens of the Czech Republic.
v The jury is composed by theorists, art critics, artists, and lecturers. Deputies of sponsoring and co-organizing institutions are invited to observe.
v Each artist may supply one graphic sheet, into two categories uttermost. The print must be made in the particular year.
v Individual prints are evaluated, not a total artist's asset. Those artists awarded in previous years can get any prize again.
v The prints must be numbered and signed.
v The prints are grouped into several categories which reflect the genres and typology of printmaking. Categories are subject to change under the influence of evolving praxis and experiences.
v A statutory award, eventually non-statutory prizes, purchase prizes or gifts, is awarded in each category. Special prizes are preciselly described (for individual graphic techniques for instance). Occasionally the non-fiscal Honorary Jury Award is awarded. The Visitors' Awards are also announced.
v The prizes are heralded and presented by institutions' deputies within the grand opening of The Print of the Year.
v All the prizes are named after their sponsors and are supported by an amount of CZK 10,000, small formate in category B of CZK 5,000, respectivelly.
v The winning print becomes a possesion of the sponsor of the award.
  
The Vladimír Boudník Award is a prestigious premium awarded to a living Czech printmaking artist for his/her significant life-work. Established in 1995 by the Inter-Kontakt-Grafik Foundation (today a civic association) with the intention to highlight distinguished printmakers for their lifetime creative contribution to the modern Czech printmaking. It is awarded for a persuasive and distinct set of graphic works of inventive expression or shape without temporal or generation restrictions.
  v The Vladimír Boudník Award is granted and subsidied by the City of Prague with an amount of CZK 20,000 till 2002, of CZK 30,000 since 2003.
v The award could be acquired only by a Czech living artist, it could not be obtained twice a life or divided.
v The award has its own rules and a jury consisting of nine or eleven members. Their innings is two years long and the jury appoints new members at its conclusion. To the continuity be maintained, the last chairperson becomes a member of a new jury. As a secretary serves an organizer's deputy with voting right.
v The winner of the Vladimír Boudík Award is obliged to show a collection of his/her works in the frame of The Print of the Year exhibition. If he/she repulses, the jury must assign a new candidate.
v The award is presented by a deputy of the City of Prahy within the grand opening of The Print of the Year exhibition.
